Weapons
When a weapon is upgraded, it gains a base damage bonus, as well as an increase in the scaling factor that affects other stats. The weapon can also gain a variety of upgrade components that provide additional attributes or effects and some even have distinctive cosmetic effects. These upgrades can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets and gathering tools. The majority of them require that the item has an upgrade slot available and meets certain requirements. When a weapon or armor piece is equipped with an upgrade component it, it can be replaced with another however the previous upgrade will be destroyed (except for legendary equipment and upgrades). Upgrade components can be recovered through the Black Lion Salvage Kit Ascended Salvage tool, or high-tier salvaging tool that is attached to an item.
In addition to the basic upgrades, a weapon can be upgraded with an attribute called Calibration that increases certain stats, such as Weakspot Damage or Crit Rate. This is done through the Gear Workbench interaction menu. Based on the tier of the weapon the process can be repeated up to four times.
When the weapon reaches its maximum upgrade, it can then be modified to give different bonuses and effects, or to improve specific stats. Several of these upgrades can be re-applied at once, and the effects are based on the nature of the weapon.
Two Blacksmiths can perform these upgrades in the game: Blacksmith Iji on the Road to the Manor Site of Grace and Smithing Master Hewg at the Church of Elleh hub. The upgrade materials are both different: Smithing Stones to modify the kind of damage a weapon deals and Somber Smithing Stones to modify the standard weapons.
In general, it is advised to improve weapon damage first, followed by armour defense, and then the other secondary stats as required by your build. It is not uncommon to see melee Druids upgrade their weapon prior to upgrading other equipment. This will increase DPS. This is particularly applicable to enchantments, which can be extremely effective in boosting the weapon's damage and other stats.
Armor
Item upgrades allow players to boost the stats of certain armors, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. These upgrades can also give additional effects, for example, an increase in damage or a cosmetic enhancement. Most armor upgrades increase the strength or defense of an item by just a little. Some upgrades, however, could result in significant improvements in defense or strength. This is especially true when upgrading epic items.
Certain upgrades grant special abilities that can be activated when wearing armor. These abilities can be helpful in combat, such as providing a boost to attack speed or blocking. Certain upgrades can have passive effects that are useful like decreasing damage when wearing armor or increasing the chance of avoiding an attack.

If a player wants to upgrade Steelclash armor to Dragonscale The first attempt will result in a new Dragonscale armor with a defense base between 59-67. The second attempt will result in an Dragonscale armor that has a base defense of 67-77.

This makes them very useful for certain builds. There are other ways to increase the strength of armor apart from upgrading the armor, like using the engineer trait to increase armor penetration or the challenger to reduce the weight of the entire armor.
